Easy Photo Edges for Your Digital Scrapbook Layout with Masks and Filters

Note: Tutorial demonstration is in Photoshop 7.0.

Showing off a special photo in your digital scrapbook layout is easy and fun with the use of simple masks and filters. Even if you haven't used either, this tutorial will show you how easy it is to combine these two great Photoshop tools.

Open your image of choice. Make sure to work with a copy of your image, not the original. Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool and select the part of the photo that will remain intact. Most of my photo will not be altered. I left a border of approximately ¼" around all edges.

Next, select Quick Edit Mask from your Tool Palette, or, as I prefer, simply hit the letter "Q" on your keyboard. This will make the edges of your image turn red. Remember, all areas covered by red will end up erased. (Tip: Don't want straight, clean edges? Use your brushes to grunge up the border!)

Now it's time to apply your filter. To get a torn, rough look on your edges, go to Filter> Brush Strokes> Splatter. Adjust the Spray and Smoothness to get a look that appeals to you. I used a Spray of 10 and a Smoothness of 5. (Tip: If you can't see your border in the preview screen, click and drag in the window until it appears). Click "OK," and now you will see the red border has changed to reflect your filter choice.

Select Quick Mask Mode again or hit "Q" on your keyboard. You will now see the red border replaced by a marquee selection. Now go to Select> Inverse or Ctrl+Shift+I on your keyboard to select just the border of the image. Click Edit> Clear or click Delete on your keyboard. Now your photo has a great torn-like decorative edge! See how easy that was?

There are lots of different filter options, so don't be afraid to play around and see what happens. This digital scrapbook border was created by applying the Tiny Lens Filter, which can be found at Filter> Distort> Glass and selecting "Tiny Lens" in the drop down menu.
