How to Make a Realistic Drop Shadow for Dimensional Items
Note: Tutorial shown using PSCS2.
1. I have my layout open and zoomed in to 33.3%.
2. Open the Push Pin image and drag onto your layout.
3. I resized the pin. I went to Edit> Transform> Scale to 35% (make sure to click on "Maintain Aspect Ratio" so you don't warp the image) and applied the transformation.
4. Duplicate the Push Pin layer by dragging it onto the Create New Layer icon at the bottom of your Layers Palette.
5. Go to Image> Adjustments> Desaturate to change the Push Pin to a colorless image.
6. Drag the copy/colorless Push Pin layer underneath the original/color Push Pin layer.
7. Then move the colorless Push Pin to where you want your shadow, rotating as needed to keep the "pin points," or where the Pin pierces the paper, touching.
8. Then go to Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur and adjust your blur, I used 15.0 pixels.
9. Next, adjust your layer's Blend Mode to "Multiply" and adjust the opacity for a realistic shadow, I used 50%.
10. For a final touch of realism, we are going to make a hole in the paper where the Pin pierces it, so make a new layer under the copy/colorless Push Pin layer.
11. Select the Brush Tool, a nice crisp round brush, color black, sized at 9 px, and click right where the Pin pierces the paper once or twice, without moving the brush.
12. Because this is on white paper, I am going to leave the hole like it is. If it were a dark item that the Pin was piercing, I would then add an Inner Glow for realism (Layer> Style> Inner Glow).
