Fix Scratches and Creases in Old Photos with the Clone Stamp Tool
Note: Digital scrapbooking tutorial is demonstrated using Photoshop CS2 on a PC.
In Photoshop, the Clone Stamp Tool is an extremely helpful tool in fixing small scratches and creases in old photos. It allows you to duplicate part of an image over the damaged area of the photo.
Open or scan the file that needs to be corrected. As you can see above, there is a big crease on the left side of the photo that I want to fix.
Select the Clone Stamp Tool from the tool bar.
Now, choose a brush shape and size; this will be your applicator for the scratch/crease removal. I like to use a regular, round brush image with soft edges. My brush settings are Hardness: 0%, Master Diameter (or size): 30, and Opacity: 100%.
Next, zoom in to the area of the photo that you want to fix.
Now, we are going to identify a "sample area" of the image to apply over the damaged area. With the Clone Stamp Tool selected, hover over an area close to the crease. Once you are over the area you want to use, click the "Alt" key. The cursor momentarily becomes a target sign to show that the "sample area" has been selected.
Now, click on the image and slowly drag along the crease or scratch. A "copy" of the sample area will automatically be placed over anywhere that you drag with the Clone Stamp Tool. Feel free to unclick and drag for shorter strokes, instead of one long stroke. Re-establish your "sample area" as needed.
Voila! A photo good as new!
