Creating Custom Brushes in Paint Shop Pro
Brushes are one of my favorite tools in digital scrapbooking. I frequently create custom brushes from PNGs that come in the Scrap Girls collections.
There are a few things we need to understand about brushes before we can start. In PSPX, the maximum size is 500X500px, and in PSPXi, the maximum is 999X999px.

Each brush has two files, a PSPBRUSH and a PSPSCRIPT; both files are necessary to make the brush useable. If you are missing one of the files, you will see a big, black circle in your brush folder drop-down menu.

I have set up a folder to keep all of my Scrap Girls custom brushes in to make them easy to find. I also save them with the exact name as the PNG file to make it simple to give credit to the designer. Here you can see the two files I created when I saved Brandy Hackman’s Blossoms & Blooms Gold Twig as a custom brush.

To create a custom brush, you will most likely need to resize your PNG image. Crop your PNG as close to the edge as you can. Image> Resize. Set your pixel width to 500 and check the "Lock Aspect Ratio" box, then click "OK."

To save your custom brush: File> Export> Custom Brush.

In the dialogue box, type in the PNG name and other information, then click the "Edit Paths" button to choose the folder to save the brush to.

A new dialogue box will open; use the drop-down menu to choose the folder. You can see that I have my brush file location preferences set to this folder. If you need to set file location preferences, you will find them under File> Preferences> File Locations.

When I activate my Paint Brush Tool and use the drop-down menu to choose the folder I saved my custom brush in, my brush is now ready to use on my layout!
