Story Winner #8: A Magical Announcement
Sometime around Christmas, December 2001, I stepped out of our back door and found a soother (pacifier) on our doorstep. Now, this may seem like a very ordinary thing to you, but when I saw it, I had goosebumps all over my body. What's so special about finding a soother? Well, let me tell you.
My husband and I were ready to become parents. We wanted a baby and had been trying to get pregnant for several months. But each month, I was disappointed. We were thinking of consulting a doctor to have a check-up. And then I found the soother. We were convinced that it was a sign from above, that our wish was going to come true. After all, how would a soother just end up on our doorstep?
Of course, there was a logical explanation. At the time, we rented a house from a butcher, and we shared a driveway with him. His customers drove on that driveway, too, and sometimes parked near our door. Although it's very possible that one day a child lost its soother on our doorstep, still ... it brought me hope.
We hung the soother in our Christmas tree, full of good hopes. And a few weeks later I got pregnant. Really, I did!
If magic ever happened to us, it surely was on the day that the soother ended up on our doorstep. And the soother? I had never seen any soother like it. It was transparent, with no text or print, just blank. One of a kind.
The next year our daughter, Linske, was born on October 5, 2002. We still have the soother, and sometimes I hang it on the Christmas tree, not because I am hoping for another baby, but just because it was so special. It was a magical announcement, and one I will never, ever forget.
I made this digital scrapbooking layout (below) of our daughter, Linske. The photo of Linske was taken about a year after our surprise on the doorstep.

About the Author:
Anja De Dobbelaere: I live in Belgium, am wife to a loving husband, and mother to a wonderful daughter. Linske is 10 now, and she's an only child. We tried to give her a brother or sister, but had to give up. I work as a secretary, but took a four-year evening course in graphic design and graduated two years ago. During that course, I discovered digital scrapbooking! Since August 2011, I'm totally hooked. It combines the two things I love most: Photoshop and doing something creative with all those pictures that have been on my computer for years now. Digital scrapbooking is not really widely known in Belgium, but I'm beginning to notice a few changes in the people around me. Since November, I've joined two creative teams, and that is really inspiring. Being a creative team member makes me scrap differently than when I'm scrapping for my personal books. And it's giving me the opportunity to grow and develop in my scrapping "career." I can't imagine my life without digital scrapping!
