Best Friends
As the song goes, "Let me tell you 'bout my best friend...." He's short, he's tan, and has bad breath, but I love him like a child! Of course, I'm talking about my dog, Bandit. He has truly been an inspiration and a blessing in my life in so many ways.
About five years ago, my husband and I bought a house that was an hour away from most of our friends and family. I didn't know a soul in this new town, and I worked from home, so I was really feeling very isolated and lonely. We were also struggling with infertility issues, and things were looking sort of bleak. My husband was not much of a dog person, but he could see I wasn't exactly filled with a "zest for life" at that time, and so he agreed we should adopt a puppy.
Adopting Bandit was the turning point in my life where everything started slowing improving. Every day I'd walk Bandit for about an hour, and we started meeting many of the other dogs in the neighborhood. For a while, I didn't know the owners' names, but I was happy to be out just talking to people again. Pretty soon, I knew all our neighbors, and shortly after that, we had actual friends! I came to really look forward to our daily walks because it was the most social part of my day.
A few months later, my husband and I decided to try our first infertility treatment, and to say I was a wreck would not be an exaggeration! Although I wanted to stay in bed and wallow in my fear and uncertainty, Bandit didn't care. All he knew was that it was walking time, and instead of moping around, I needed to put on my shoes and take him outside! Two weeks after an IUI (artificial insemination for those who have not suffered through infertility), I found out I was pregnant with our first child!
Now I don't think that Bandit had any magical powers that helped fix these problems, but I do believe Bandit was an instrument God used to help keep me focused on something positive. Sometimes when there is so much overwhelming difficulty in life, we need an extra "push" just to keep going. I will always credit Bandit for being the force that kept me going.
A dog is great companion in little ways, too! When I don't want to drive to the gas station alone, Bandit is happy to come along. When I'm scared that there's a big bug in the basement, Bandit is by my side checking it out. When the kids are playing in the yard, Bandit is out there keeping watch over them. He's also the only person willing to go jogging with me, and I must give him credit for getting me ready to run my first 5K!
If you're feeling like your life could use a little love and companionship, consider adopting a new best friend. October was National Adopt a Shelter Dog month, but you can adopt one anytime! They'll enrich your life every day in big and little ways.
By the time you read this, Bandit will have just had his 5th birthday on November 10. It's been five wonderful years of companionship, and I look forward to many more with my best friend!
