Kitchen Gifts
I was recently watching an episode of The Andy Griffith Show. It was Aunt Bee's birthday, and Andy bought her two dozen canning jars. He just knew that she wanted a sensible, useful gift. Aunt Bee was so disheartened when she opened the gift. She happened to have her heart set on a lovely, feminine, perhaps frivolous, bed jacket. The happy ending came when Andy presented her with another gift to unwrap - the dainty, longed-for bed jacket!
While watching the show, I was thinking about the kind of gifts that I like to receive. Christmas had just passed, so several recently received gifts came to mind. You see, I've never been one to wear much jewelry, and I'm not exactly up to date with the latest clothes fashions. Perhaps I'm not even aware of the previous clothes fashions! And, while it seems to be a common idea that a man shouldn't give his wife kitchen gadgets as a gift... I love that sort of gift! I call them Kitchen Gifts.
During Christmas 2011, I received three (yes, three!) Kitchen Gifts. Well, one of them showed up earlier in December since I ordered it early. Oh, um, yes... I ordered it. Ha! I told my husband that it would be a great gift for me. His family had a tradition of eating finger foods on Christmas Eve, and I try to continue that tradition for him. I thought that this year, it would be fun to include cheese fondue. He wasn't sure what to look for or where, so I decided to make things easier for him. A lovely cheese fondue set was delivered to our home one day in early December. He came home that evening to a cheese fondue meal. I still laugh at his response. He said, "Is this legal?" I said, "Well, we can still wrap the box and put it under the tree. I just thought I should test out the cheese recipe before Christmas Eve."
The second Kitchen Gift was a Dutch oven. Yay! You see, sadly enough, I had never made a roast that I was really impressed with. As I sat watching an episode of Food Network's The Pioneer Woman, the show's hostess, Ree Drummond, was cooking what she called "Perfect Pot Roast." I knew (absolutely knew) that I needed a Dutch oven. I was determined to cook a roast that looked as scrumptious as the one Ree was serving on the show. Obviously, I needed a Dutch oven to do so. Obviously. Well, less than a week after Christmas, with my brand new Dutch oven, I did it. I made a pot roast that I was proud of!
The third Kitchen Gift was from Santa. It was actually left for Ethan, Hunter, and Nathan... but I think Santa had me in mind, too. He brought me, oh, I mean, the boys, an ice cream maker! What a fun gift. And we have really enjoyed eating our homemade ice cream. We've had three kinds in the freezer: vanilla, chocolate chip, and peanut butter cup. Thanks, Santa!
When I opened up a gift from my in-laws, I found myself holding a gift card to a department store. I pictured many gals planning what kind of new clothes they could buy or what piece of jewelry they would want. Me? I immediately thought about the food processor that I've had my eye on!

Favorite Product I've designed:
All of my collections are like my babies. I love them all! I'll claim my most recent one, Firefighter Collection Biggie, as my favorite for now. I had fun designing it and thinking about the pictures I would use in the layouts. In the future, I'm sure I'll have more pictures of our son, Nathan, which will work well with this collection. The bold colors are great for other themes, as well.

Designer Do-Over by Melanie Johnson
For this assignment, I decided to pick a layout that I had never finished and give it a "designer do-over." As you can see, it was in sore need of some attention!

In my original Photoshop file, I had added the photos that I wanted to use along with my prospective title, but that's as far as I had gotten. As you can see, there's nothing at all remarkable about this page, and it certainly doesn't tell the story I want to tell.
The story I had in mind is about our children's bedtime routine, so I'm going to use that as the title instead. I want a more neutral background overall, but I chose a colorful cluster to give it some punch.

The one-photo cluster lets me put the focus on the journaling and not necessarily on the images. I also decided to add a cute, sleepy-moon embellishment since this is all about bedtime.

I like the way this has shaped up! Now the final piece is to add my journaling and a few final embellishments.
It's made all the difference to complete this layout by adding the story behind the title. This is a memory to cherish!
