The Grass is Truly Greener, But on Our Side of the Fence
We are currently in a dilemma over moving from the "burbs" of Philadelphia to southern California. My husband's company is located in Carlsbad, California, and he travels there for a week approximately once a month. For the past several years, we have known the time would come when we would need to make a decision one way or the other about moving.
As that time quickly approaches, I find myself comparing our home in Blue Bell with what would be our new home in the Carlsbad area of California.
We hear from both easterners and southern Californians alike how beautiful southern California is. And I agree. The views of the ocean and the lagoons are incredible. The sunsets are beautiful. The mountains are breathtaking. And day after day of sunshine certainly can't be beat. And, of course, there is no early morning snow to shovel off the sidewalks or leaves to rake up Saturday after Saturday. The lifestyle in southern California is wonderful.
But then I sit back and realize I am seeing all of this through a visitor's eyes. You know, "the grass is always greener..." and all that. But as I compared the houses that I toured in Carlsbad with our home in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, I realized the grass was greener - but on our side of the fence. Literally and figuratively.
It seems that to have green grass in southern California, you have to plant sod and put in an irrigation system and a watering system – hence, the very small grassy areas in the already small yards. This is why so much of the very limited yard space is concrete, mulch, or very hearty plantings. It makes me really appreciate that acre of green grass (dog poop and all) that I take for granted.
In the East, we have seasons. Each season brings change. I like the change. It brings endings and beginnings. So give me the snow to shovel, because that means that we can enjoy the beauty that the snow brings to our home when it is blanketed in white. Give me the aggravation of spending 15 minutes bundling the kids up in snow gear only to have them tell me they have to go to the bathroom, because that means I get to see them come back in the house with rosy cheeks and worn out from sledding with the neighborhood kids. Give me the leaves to rake (or in our case, the landscaper's bill) because that means we had the weeks of enjoyment of watching our world change from greens to muted yellows and oranges and reds and browns. Give me my allergy sufferings in the spring because that means that I am enjoying all the beautiful colors that are re-appearing in our landscape.
We may still move to southern California, and I am sure we will make the best of it. But be assured that when we hear that our East Coast friends and family are shoveling out from 10 inches of snow, we will be thinking of them with lots of mixed feelings.
For now, I guess you could say we're sitting on that proverbial fence!
- Lynn Merves

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.
Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to hello@scrapgirls.com. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!
