Random Facts About Me
Throughout my life, I've had different hobbies and interests. Some of them I still do, and some of them are now pieces of what make me who I am today. Unfortunately, I don't have photos from all those different life experiences, but I wanted to do a digital scrapbook layout that would capture some of those moments. I had a lot of material to choose from:
There were my days after college when I kept taking classes like Singing for the Vocally Challenged, Cartooning, Guitar, Astronomy, and Paper Making.
There were the years of boxing and the bloody noses that came with it. Sometimes I had flute lessons right afterwards and had to play with a split lip.
I worked with Filipinos for 15 years and got pretty good at speaking Tagalog, although that is now fading with time.
Maybe I could talk about how my mom and I decided to learn how to use power tools and made a cedar-strip canoe. Then, I went on to build my own coffee table and entertainment center, too.
I'm still fascinated with bugs and like to mount them in displays... maybe that's why I have a bog garden with several types of carnivorous plants.
I guess I'm just interested in everything that comes my way and have found such joy and happiness in experiencing each new endeavor. I hope I never stop learning and trying new things.

Applying Styles and Coloring ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates
Tutorial created using Abobe Photoshop CS4 with Mac OSX 10.6
The Scrap Girls Boutique has a ton of great ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates, but have you ever wondered if you are getting the best use out of them, or if there are any other ways to use them that you haven't thought of yet? Well, in today's tutorial, I'm going to show you two ways you can use these incredibly versatile templates:
- Applying styles to the template
- Coloring on the template with a brush
Here is my layout with the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Nature Frames, ready to jazz-up.
First, I applied a layer style to the vine layer. As you can see, I have my Styles Palette opened up in the upper right corner of Photoshop. I also have ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Frippery 6401 Super Biggie loaded into my Styles Palette. To apply the style to the vine, I simply made sure that the vine layer was selected on my Layers Palette and then clicked on the style I wanted to apply to it. It was that simple!
I liked this style, but I didn't think that it popped off the background paper enough. So, I decided I wanted to apply some coloring on top of the vine layer. To do this, I created a new layer right above the vine layer. Then I pressed Cmd+Click on the vine layer to select just the area over the vine. Next, I took a soft, round brush from the Brush Palette and colored lightly over the vine in green and purple.
I adjusted the Blending Mode to "Color" on the colored-on layer so that I could still see the layer behind.
I used similar techniques on the three box frames and flower petals, and the layout is ready to go!

It's time for the Sketch Challenge and Crop! Join Cheri (Cheri T) on Tuesday, January 24 at 7pm MT in the Scrap Girls Chat Room! Enjoy getting a little creative boost for your pages? Are you needing help getting started? Then this is the challenge for you! A few hours before the chat begins, Cheri will post a link for you to download the sketch. Use it as the starting point for your page; be inspired by the basic arrangement; flip things around or scraplift the whole thing. All interpretations of the design are welcome and encouraged. Don't worry about any deadlines... post your layout when it works with your schedule. Hope to see you there!
East Coast High Noon Crop
Wednesday, January 25th - 10:00AM MST
Join April (April Showers) each Wednesday at 10am MT for the East Coast High Noon Crop. All coasts and time zones are welcome! These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes, simply giving participants a one hour goal and a fun, new challenge each week. On January 25th, we'll be doing a Brush Challenge. Try to use at least two brushes in your layout. Create your layout and upload it to the special High Noon Crop Gallery. You'll be amazed what you can get done in just one hour, but there is no High Noon Sheriff timing you! Hope to see you in the chat room!
Speed Scrap Crop
Wednesday, January 25th - 6:00PM MST
It's time for some Speed! Join Carla (CRS) and Shannon (tinkerbell11) at 6pm MT for the Speed Scrap Crop! We'll give you six tasks, spread out over an hour. You'll then have the hour to get your layout finished and posted in the Gallery!
January Message Board Game: Jumpstart January!
It's time to kick off the new year with fun and focus on scrapbooking! And a few prizes thrown in never hurt, right? Join us on the message board this month for "Jumpstart January!" This is a message board game and challenge to start your year with fun and focus on taking time to scrapbook regularly despite the little speedbumps of life. When the month is over, you'll have completed several layouts and been challenged and treated to some fun along the way.
A member of the Welcoming Committee will post a mini-challenge/task every Monday through Saturday during January. Some tasks will require message board participation, email responses, or gallery posting. Those who complete all tasks and submit or post required participation by 11:59pm MT on January 31st will be entered in a drawing to win one of three $10 Gift Certificates to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Those who complete just the layouts will be entered in a drawing to win one of two $5 Gift Certificates. Those who complete just the speedbumps will be entered in a drawing for one of two $3 Gift Certificates. (Those who complete all tasks will have their name entered in all three drawings!)
