How to Recolor ScrapSimple Bows
Tutorial created using Photoshop Elements 7.0 with Windows XP
One of the best parts of digital scrapbooking is the ability to create your own digital embellishments. Scrap Girls has made this easy for you do with their ScrapSimple line of digital scrapbooking products. One of these ScrapSimple products is embellishment templates. They are easy to recolor, combine with others, and create your own customized embellishments.

ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Extra Bows
ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Extra Bows lets you create a variety of bows by simply recoloring them or applying patterned paper. The possibilities are endless. Let me show you how easy it is to create your own.

First, open the bow you would like to recolor for your digital scrapbooking layout. You will see that it will be in grayscale, making it easy for you to customize it to your preference.

To change the color of the bow, simply go to Enhance> Adjust Color> Color Variations. (In Photoshop, go to Image> Adjustments> Variations.)

The Color Variation menu will appear. Begin by simply clicking on the color options to create the color you would like your bow to be. When you have the perfect color, select OK.
Now you have a custom-colored bow that perfectly coordinates with your other papers, embellishments, or photos. Recoloring is a great way to customize embellishments when your digital scrapbooking kit doesn't have the color you need.

Another way to recolor any ScrapSimple embellishment is to "clip" a patterned paper to the embellishment to make it even more unique or to match the papers found in a collection.
Let's add a clipping mask to our original grayscale bow. To do this, open up the patterned paper and place it on the layer directly above your grayscale bow.

Make sure the colored paper layer is selected in your Layers Palette and hold down Ctrl+G for Photoshop Elements (Ctrl+Alt+G for Photoshop). This will create a clipping mask. Now you can see how the patterned paper takes on the shape of the bow below it.

Next, let's give the bow a little dimension by adding a Blending Mode. First, make sure your clipped paper layer is highlighted. Go to the top of your Layers Palette and click on the drop-down menu box at the top left (the word "Normal" will appear in this box if you haven't applied any Blending Modes yet). Go through the list of Blending Mode options and try several, but look for one that works well with the patterned paper you've chosen. Remember, you can apply one, and if you don't like it, simply click the Undo button on the top menu bar. For my example, I chose "Linear Burn" because it allowed the shape and shadowing of the bow to show through.

I felt the bow was a tad dark, but that was easily corrected by selecting the grayscale bow and going to Enhance> Adjust Lighting> Levels. By adjusting the lights and darks, I lightened up the entire bow and gave it the right amount of depth.
We're almost done. Make sure you save your recolored bow under a new file name and as a PNG if you want to save it for future use.
You are now finished! You have a unique bow that will be the perfect match for your digital layout. Now go have fun creating your own unique digital bows!
