Can a Gothy Girl Scrap?
My friend, Bryn, and I worked at a gaming company that catered to goths, gamers, and geeks. When she discovered I was going to design for Scrap Girls, she said, "Lore? No way!"
Given that I was used to designing wizardy bookcovers, medieval dragons, and trading card games, she felt it might not fit me. She made me laugh, and I told her what an opportunity I felt Scrap Girls would be.
Nevertheless, her remark made me think. I looked again at what scrapping was all about, and I concluded that for every idea, there are a bazillion interpretations - all that's really important is that it's your story, told in the way you want to tell it. Which means everyone can enjoy it, since each person creates her personal pages about family, friends, events, and whatever else is going on in life.
What's so fun about it is the unending opportunities to create, whether you prefer a traditional album look or the wacky and whimsical. There are no real "rules" so that makes it very enjoyable for anyone, since any idea could be your next layout. There's not a "wrong way" to scrap.
When I was young, I knew I wanted to be a designer. The skills I gained in design school gave me a nice advantage toward crafting pages. But they are not as important as other things, such as:
How important it is for me to journal and create visual stories
How meaningful it is to me that I share my story for posterity
The sense of well-being I gain from musing over my projects
Not unlike therapy, getting your story down on paper can be very healing or enriching
I've always been drawn to paper and books, pens and ink, and stationery stores. I love books, but especially handmade books, illustrated postcards, and letter-pressed cards. A wonderful one-of-a-kind greeting with a little flourish attached is endlessly more touching to receive than the most elegant commercial card. I treasure these, and I'm fortunate enough to have a couple of very creative friends who still use the US Postal Service and who are believers in the delight of receiving letters.
One of the most talented practitioners of this kind of art, Sabrina Ward Harrison, was my first influence. Her wonderful books, full of her photos and hand-lettered musings on beautiful backgrounds which she collages or paints herself, are an inspiration for anyone who has ever wanted to illustrate the moments of life.
So in my own style, I have created several journals, some of them swollen and crunchy with additional pages, inserts, pockets and notes. They chronicle the times in my life - some painful, but mostly wonderful, of meaningful encounters with friends, family, and people I did not yet know. Some did not archive big events, but would merely be a small entry, perhaps about a leaf, a song, or the light play on an object. Sometimes they are just little observations that could seem so insignificant to someone else that it might hardly be worth the effort.
But then I've had the joy of looking back. I'm often amused to read what I said or revisit happenings from years ago, and I'm delighted to find an old scrap which marked a milestone. I can see how I've grown, and I remember those I love.
So I can tell Bryn it's immaterial if I have gothic leanings, which are more about my love of old, beautiful things anyway. What matters is that I'm a person with my own unique story to tell.

Favorite Product I've designed:
I love elegant script, and patterns or stripes. I like red. And I love black. Valentine's Day isn't my favorite, but I loved this collection for its rich colors and whimsical feel. It just came together in a lot of ways.
This layout below was a self-challenge to design something 180 degrees from a romantic look, using the elements from the Bold Love Collection Biggie.
