Framed Perpetual Calendar Project
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS4 with Windows 7
If you're looking for a fun gift for friends or family for the upcoming holidays, you can't go wrong with using your digital scrapbooking products to create a fun, personalized, printable calendar project! There are many options for printing and binding your calendars. I'd like to show you the fun way I used ScrapSimple Calendar Templates: 8.5x11 Perpetual to create gifts for some special friends and families for the coming year.
First, I opened the PSD file that comes in the download for ScrapSimple Calendar Templates: 8.5x11 Perpetual. (If your software doesn't support PSD files, then use the individual PNG files that are also included in your download.) When you open the PSD file, you will see several folders. They contain the individual Month, Years, and Numbered Dates layers. Simply open each folder using the drop-down menu. Select the layer you need for the calendar you're creating by clicking on the Eye icon to the left of the layer.
I like the 8.5x11-inch format for at-home printing, but for this project I'd like to print the calendar at 8x10 inches for easy standard framing. The ScrapSimple Calendar Templates: 8.5x11 Perpetual were designed with slightly wider margins so that they can easily be converted to an 8x10-inch size if preferred. Here's how you can easily convert it if you would like to use the calendar in 8x10-inch format instead of 8.5x11-inch.
First, click on Image> Canvas Size. In the window that opens, make sure you have your canvas anchored in the center and then change the dimensions in the Width and Height fields.
This will not resize the components of your calendar template; it will just alter how much of the template is visible on your printable canvas. You can see in the images below that by changing the canvas size, all I've done is make less of the dark gray background visible.
With my correct month, year, and numbered dates made visible, and my canvas resized to 8x10 inches, I'm ready to customize my printable calendar using my other favorite Scrap Girls digital scrapbooking supplies. The easiest ways to utilize layout and calendar templates, in my opinion, are to create clipping masks and apply styles. Remember, to create a clipping mask, simply drag a paper of your choice onto your canvas, and make sure that in the Layers Palette, the paper layer is directly above the template layer you're working on. Then click Ctrl+Alt+G for Photoshop (Ctrl+G for Photoshop Elements) and your paper will be clipped to the layer of the template you're working on.
When you've finished designing your printable calendar, simply print it and frame it. But how do you actually use your printed and framed calendar? You don't want it just as a reference for the date, right? You want to be able to write on your calendar and plan your month in the generously sized calendar squares, don't you? And you want to use that fun "Noteworthy" column to jot down shopping lists or important reminders, right? Just grab a fine-tip wet erase or dry erase marker and write on the glass of the frame above the printed calendar! At the end of each month, simply wipe the glass clean and insert the new month's printed calendar into the frame!
Using the ScrapSimple Calendar Template: 8.5x11 Perpetual is fun and versatile. Let your creativity extend to the way you use it, not just the way you design it.
