Did You Know You Could Do This?
If you've been around for awhile, you know that I have a little homemaking blog named How Mom Did It. The purpose of this blog is to share what my mother and grandmother taught me about homemaking, cooking, sewing, gardening, being thrifty and such. I took a little hiatus from this blog during 2011, but have recently started working on it again because it's fun to have a change of topic sometimes.
In October, I met this cool couple named Dick and Mary Melvin. I quickly realized that Dick and Mary are living a very interesting lifestyle - much like the lifestyle that my grandmother lived - and so I've given them a regular, weekly column in the How Mom Did It blog. They have sent me a list of article ideas that knocked my socks off, and I can't wait for people to read these articles (me, too!).
This is what Dick and Mary said about themselves:
We are living a tightwad existence on our 160-acre place in northeastern Missouri. Our meat includes chickens that we raise. We plan on including pond-raised catfish in our diet in the near future. We plant a large garden each year. Plus, we battle squirrels and birds for wild nuts and berries. The wildlife often beats us to this free fruit, but they need to live, too. We do unique things like make our own laundry soap on the cheap, create dog toys out of worn out denim from jeans, generate our own garden fertilizer with lawn clippings and water our trees and the herb garden with waste water from the washing machine. We also have raised two children, with whom Mary stayed at home. One is in the U.S. Navy, and the other is an undergraduate college student. We understand running a home on a tight budget while trying to live the good life.
Today, I thought that I'd point you over to the amazing article they wrote about how to make your own laundry soap to save money. Did you know you could do this? It was news to me!

Have you seen the price of name-brand laundry soap lately? You can easily spend over $20 on a large box of powdered detergent. It's enough to make you scream. That might make you popular in a Halloween haunted house, but it doesn't solve your laundry issues. Have you ever asked yourself, "How can I make soap?"

Here's a low-cost alternative on homemade laundry soap, how to make it using old-fashioned ingredients, a half-hour of your time, a little elbow grease, and a lot less money. Read more here.

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Coloring Grayscale Journaling Papers
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop Elements 6 and Windows 7
Journaling in your digital scrapbook layouts is easy because you can type in exactly what you want and then edit it later. Having a large selection of journaling papers at your fingertips can give you the perfect opportunity to preserve a few words, or they can act as a design element all by themselves. This tutorial will show you a quick trick to recolor ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Lifted Journal Paper Super Biggie and a new idea for how to use them on a layout.
First, select a journaling paper file and open it in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. Make sure the layer you wish to color is selected.

In Photoshop Elements, you can get a perfect aged-paper shade by going to Enhance> Adjust Color> Color Variations.
When you receive your ScrapSimple items, they will be in grayscale and have no color to them, while natural paper or aged paper has a brown, warm look. To get the color to look right, we need to add a bit of red and a bit of yellow. You can do this with the options for color variations. It is as easy as clicking two boxes.

Click once on the "Increase Red" button and once on the "Decrease Blue" box. I know you are thinking, What? She just said we need to add red and yellow! So why are we messing with the blue box? It helps when you are re-coloring items in PSE to know how Photoshop sees colors. It is easier to see this in Photoshop, so I will share a little window with you to demonstrate.

(In Photoshop, you reach this menu by going to Image> Adjustments> Color Balance.)
Here you can see that yellow is the opposite of blue, cyan is the opposite of red, and magenta is the opposite of green. So in PSE, you have the quick-click buttons to do this, so by decreasing the blue, you are increasing the yellow.
This will work for aged frames or any paper that needs a warm, aged look.
Now that you know how to recolor ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Lifted Journal Paper Super Biggie at the speed of light, don't think that journaling papers are just for journaling! Now that you can quickly recolor your ScrapSimple Templates, you can fill up a whole page with journaling embellishments for a cool layered look.
