Weaving Christmas Lights into Your Titles
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS3 with Windows 7
Weaving an embellishment into the words of a title isn't as hard as it might sound. It is a simple technique that adds great detail to your digital scrapbooking layouts.
One of the best things about digital scrapbooking is that you can create the illusion of something for effect that would be impossible to do in real life. Take, for example, adding electric Christmas lights to a paper layout; it might be a little bit difficult to achieve the look of a title wrapped in Christmas lights, but with a digital layout, it just takes a little technique that I will show you.

Place the Lights on Top of Your Title
Start with your title. You can use a title that you create, or for simplicity, you can use a word art piece from your favorite collection. It helps to have a bit of a chunky title so that you can really see where it wraps around. The title I am using is a word art from the Joyful Morning Collection Mini.
Next, I picked out a string of electric Christmas lights from Assemble Your Own: Christmas Garland Biggie. This set includes PNG files of Christmas garland and colored and white Christmas lights that will snap into place in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
First, open the layers for the solid string and either the colored lights or the white lights. Next, drag the lights into the frame with the string while holding down the Shift key. The lights should snap into place on the string.
Now merge those two layers and drag the string of lights into your layout.
Place the string of lights on top of your word art and adjust the placement where you want it.

Make a Direct Selection
Next, you are going to make a direct selection of your word art by holding down the Ctrl key while you click on the thumbnail for the word art layer. This should give you a selection of your word art with the "marching ants" around the outside of the letters. Now, click on the layer for your string of lights. The marching ants should still be marching, but the lights layer is now editable.

Erase to Produce the Illusion
Choose the Eraser Tool and select a Hard Round Brush. Here is where it gets fun! Look at your title and decide where you want the string of lights to go behind your word art. Run the eraser over that part of the word art, and it will erase the string of lights only where it crosses the word art. Continue looking at your word art and weaving the lights in and out. If you want the string in front of the word art, do nothing; if you want it to go behind, erase that part. Now, if you do all of this with the "marching ants" of the selection, you will be making a perfect illusion, and you won't have to be precise with your erasing.

By selectively erasing the string of lights, you create the illusion that the string is winding in front of and behind the words. By using the direct selection, you make the erasing match up perfectly with the words for a seamless look.
Now you can add Christmas lights to all of your digital scrapbooking layouts this season!
