Two Super-Cool Tools You Might Not Know About
Ever feel like you get lost on the Internet? Ever feel like you are burning up valuable time hovering on Facebook, Twitter, and your email inbox? Ever feel like you are browsing about the web, reading blogs, following trails, and before you know it, hours have gone by, and you haven't accomplished what you set out to do?
Ever feel like you need a babysitter to keep you off of the Internet so that you can concentrate?
My worst problem has been my email inbox. I find that if I start checking it, I'll start hovering in it, instantly answering emails and then aimlessly clicking about here and there while I wait for another one. Eventually, I feel too wrung out to do the things I intended to do - like write articles, blog posts, design, and - of course - make digital scrapbooking pages.
But recently, I stumbled on a tool that has completely changed everything. Freedom (the name of the software tool) lets you decide how long you want to stay off of the Internet. And it works... during the time period you have selected, you simply cannot get on and you can't open Freedom's interface to cancel it or reduce the time. The only way out is to reboot your computer.
Freedom is available for both Mac and PC users at http://macfreedom.com/
You can try Freedom for five sessions without charge. A licensed version only costs $10.
I heard about Dropbox from some of my professional friends, but it took me a long time to try it out. Once I did, I was amazed at how convenient it is to use. It has become one of my favorite tools.
The big benefit of Dropbox is that it works sort of like an extra drive on your computer - you put things in it by dragging and dropping it into the Dropbox folder. Once it is there, you can easily grab it on other computers or - if you put it in the public file and it is synchronized with the Dropbox server - you can send the link to the file to someone and they can download it.
Of course, unless you purposely put a file in your public Dropbox folder, no one can get to any files you have stored - unless you give them a login.
A free Dropbox account comes with 2 GB of storage. You can also purchase up to 100 GB of additional storage. Because the files are stored on their secure server (and transferred via encryption), having files in your Dropbox folder is a great way to keep critical files backed up.
I like to put photos and scrapbooking supplies in my Dropbox folder - projects that I'm working on - because that allows me to work on them on different computers. Dropbox keeps everything synchronized for me, and the synchronization is fast because it only transfers the parts that were changed, not the whole thing every time.
Dropbox is wonderful for business applications. I've used Dropbox to pass software and files back and forth with a software developer. The Scrap Girls Newsletter Team uses Dropbox to keep track of some files they need. I like to use Dropbox to pass large files to teammates. It's faster than uploading them via FTP to our website server, and it is certainly faster and easier than YouSendIt!
Dropbox keeps a one-month history of your work, so if you need to, you can undo changes. Deleted files can be recovered.
And guess what? Dropbox now has apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, and Blackberry. This allows you to bring files with you when you're on the go, and it also makes it easy to transfer videos and photos to your computers (without having to plug everything in). Just imagine... you are on a vacation, and you want to share a number of photos you've taken with your phone with your family. You could text them, but that can be a pain. Instead, drop them in your Dropbox folder and send your family the link. They can download them in a hurry.
Download Dropbox without charge here.
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.
Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to firstname.lastname@example.org. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!
Join the Scrap Girls Monthly Club and you can have fun with the newest traditional digital and printable scrapbooking looks while saving! (A $40.87 value for $9.99 or less!)

Using ScrapSimple Paper Templates
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Mac OS 10.5.8 - Leopard
Don't you just love to discover that something you own can multi-task and stretch your dollars even further? Well, look no further than ScrapSimple Paper Templates. This tutorial will show you just one of the many ways you can use them.
Start by opening a dark paper base like the one I chose from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: School Memories (JWH_SchoolMemories_Chalk.jpg). The dark paper will highlight the effect we are making later. Next, open the template, JWH_SSPaper_SchoolMem_Time.png. On the paper template layer, select only the three clock faces and apply a layer mask (Layer> Layer Mask> Reveal Selection).
This will make only the clock faces visible. Once you have applied the layer mask, duplicate the layer (Cmd+J). On the duplicated template layer, click on the mask. With the mask highlighted, invert the mask (Cmd+I). This will hide the clock faces on this layer. You should have one layer with only clock faces and one layer with the other rings, so you will now be able to independently work on separate parts of the template.
With this same layer highlighted, apply the Sugar Style from ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Sugar Coated 6501 (SBA_SSTools_Styles_SugarCoated_FineGrain_6501). This will give the rings a subtle effect.
Now, click on the original clock face template layer and duplicate it (Cmd+J). On the bottom clock face layer, set the Blending Mode to "Screen" and the Opacity slider to 70% and Fill slider to 35%. On the duplicated clock face layer, apply its current mask. You can do this by using Layer> Layer Mask> Apply so you only have the clock faces left.
Still with the duplicated clock face layer selected, click on any black area, like a number or dash. It might help to use the Magnify Tool when making your selection. Once you have a black item selected, use the Select> Similar command to easily select all the black areas on this layer.
This will give you "marching ants" around all the black areas on that layer. Now apply a layer mask (Layer> Layer Mask> Reveal Selection). Next, I applied the blue glow stick style from ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Glow Stick 10801 to this layer. Since the style is being applied to such small items, you can adjust the style's properties in the Layer Style dialog box. I made the Outer Glow smaller so you could read the numbers more easily.
To create the hands on the clock, I used embellishments from New York City Collection (JWH_NYC_Emb_Hourhand2.png and JWH_NYC_Secondhand2.png). Drag them into your document. Size them to fit on a clock face and rotate each to reflect the time you want. Apply the same glow stick style as before to the hour hand and second hand layers. If you altered the style properties, copy the glow stick layer style (Layer> Layer Style> Copy Layer Style) from that layer and paste it (Layer> Layer Style> Paste Layer Style) onto the clock hand layers.
To get the hands on the other clocks, group the hands together using the "New Group" from Layers command in the Layers Palette Menu, then duplicate the group and position it over the other clock faces.
Here is the flattened finished paper.
Now you can use this paper for a layout background!
Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Paper Templates: School Memories, ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Glow Stick 10801, Brush Set: Glow and ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Sugar Coated 6501 are also available.
