Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To add extra emphasis to the journaling, I added an alpha for the starting letter. Then I simplified (rasterized) the text layer and used the Rectangular Marquee tool to select the words “And so.” Then I created a new layer via cut and applied the same style to the leading letter and the phrase. Then I added a brush stroke under the leading letter to add extra emphasis.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 and Apple iPhoto
Name of challenge: Use three alphas.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create the effects on the photo, I first duplicated the photo layer and turned off the visibility of the bottom layer. I then placed one of Amanda's ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates - Photo Masks: 4x6 Canvas in between the two layers and clipped (Ctrl+Alt+G) the top photo layer to it. I then sized and rotated the mask until the girls on the swing looked the way I wanted. For the sketch portion, I turned the bottom photo layer back on and applied Mandy's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photos That Pop B&W 1801 Mini. Then, I used Filter> Stylize> Find Edges to create the look of a sketch. I set the Blending Mode of the sketch layer to "Linear Burn" and used a layer mask and a grunge brush to hide parts of it and blend it into the background.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Use photos in a unique way.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make my central photo stand out and to show the 'aging' process of our family, I ran Melissa Renfro's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photo Basics 5001 through both photos and then played with the Levels until I was happy with the result. To create the background paper, I overlayed Cherise Olesons's Brown paper from her Garden Plot Collection Mini over one of her ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Mardi Gras. I changed the Blending Mode of the brown paper to "Overlay" and lowered the Opacity of the paper template to 90% to give the overall 'scratchy' feeling to the brown paper background.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS4
Name of challenge: Scrap a favorite family moment.
Journaling: Every year on the first day of the school year we have a family photo on our front steps. We rush to get ready and then dad lines everyone up, sets up the camera and then makes a mad dash to get himself into the photo as well. It is amazing to see how much you kids grow over the year, not to say we don't either, LOL. We hope this tradition is one that is carried on when you both have school going children and you will have your own record to keep.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create the alpha photo frame, I placed and sized the alphas from Angie Brigg's Scenic Route Collection Biggie on my workspace. Second, I placed the photo of my choice over a letter and created a clipping mask (Ctrl+G). The photo took the shape of the letter. Then, with the photo layer selected, I resized and moved the photo layer until the image fit to my liking. Once I had all the photos placed, I merged them. Next, I duplicated the layer and linked the duplicated layers. With the bottom layer selected, I went to Edit> Stroke at the top menu. I created a 20px, "Outside" stroke. Now my photos were framed. Finally, I clipped the "Red Damask" paper from Durin's Character Collection Biggie to the stroked layer.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
Name of challenge: Use 5 or more photos.

“M&Ms: My Not-So-Secret Indulgence” by Janine Buckles

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
There are a lot of colours in this layout, each fighting for centre stage, so I chose one colour - red - to be my focal colour. Then I used the circle, from Jan Hick's ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Sew Doodly Shapes, and Keri Schueller's Brush Set: Playful Swirls - both in red - to anchor the focal image and frame my title. To make the circle of stitching red, first I chose its layer by clicking on the thumbnail image in the Layers Palette; next I clicked Enhance> Adjust Colour> Hue/Saturation (Ctrl+U) and moved the sliders until I had a nice bright red. To make it "pop", I applied Jan's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Sew Doodly Biggie 3201.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
Name of challenge: Scrap your secret indulgence.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted to use the tree from a paper in Patternologie Paper Super Mini 2 to form my theme for this layout. I extracted it from the paper using the Magic Wand tool. Once I had the marching ants around the tree, I hit Ctrl+J, to take just the tree to its own layer. Then I duplicated that layer to my new layout. Then, I layered a light brown paper from the Jake and Emma Collection Biggie over the tree, and clicked Ctrl+G to make a clipping mask over the tree to change the color. I changed the Blending Mode to "Overlay" to lighten the new color of the tree. Then I Ctrl+Click the separate tree layer, selected Dynamic Brush Set: Straight Stitch 5001, and ran ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Edge It PSE 5001 to apply the stitching to the edge of the tree, like it is sewn onto the paper. Then I added the ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Stitching And Holes 4102 to make the stitching look realistic.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
