Life Muses by Ro: You Have to Fall Down
Susan is a 43-year-old successful business owner, specializing in
marketing and publicity. She is also a competitive ice skater.
I discovered
this while eating Waldorf salad with Susan at California Pizza in Los
Angeles. We met on the shuttle to our hotel that afternoon. After it
was discovered that we were attending the same conference, we decided
to be taxi cab buddies.
“You should try it again,” she encouraged,
when I told her that my only ice skating episode had been disastrous.
As I recall, it involved a shopping mall, a burgundy sweater, rented
skates and a very wet bottom.
“You have to have your own skates,” Susan
confided. “It’s
no good without them. And, don’t worry about being too old. I
was 32 years old when I started to skate.”
“32?”
She nodded. “There’s an entire adult
ice skating competitive world out there... somewhat like your
digital scrapbooking world.”
I had no idea.
Susan told me all about her life as an ice skater. She
sneaks away from the office twice a week for her lessons. She takes
classes with little kids, their mothers looking at her like she is
a dope. “I’m
getting pretty good,” she said.
“I’d have to get over
my fear of falling down,” I
sighed.
“Oh, you have to fall down,” Susan answered seriously. “In
fact, my teacher tells me that I don’t fall down enough.”
As
soon as she said the words, they struck me. Susan doesn’t
fall down enough.
I realized that even if Susan’s teacher didn’t
realize it, her words have a broader life application than learning
increasingly difficult ice skating skills. If we never fall down, we
aren’t
taking risks. We are staying on the sidewalk because it is dangerous
to cross the street in traffic. We are avoiding burns by never trying
to bake cookies. We can’t swim because we are afraid to wade
into the water.
It seems that the requirement to fall down during our
journey is one of life’s ironies. We feel driven to succeed because
we want to feel happy. And yet, we must fall down (and thus, feel pain)
so that we can succeed.
So, here’s our challenge for today: Try
something new. Anything at all. And, if you fall down when you attempt
it, get back up and smile. You’ve just moved yourself one fall
closer to getting it right.

Question: I see a "details" button
on some people's posts in the gallery where the supplies are
listed. When I post, I can't see where I can do that. Sometimes,
it takes a lot of space for supplies and I'd like to add that
somewhere else like all of you other wonderful gals do!
Answer 1: The list of
details you mention are usually uploaded as meta data with
the layout. I use Adobe Photoshop CS3, and while I am working,
I keep entering the supplies via File> Info. When
the dialogue box opens, you can write in all of the supplies
used and any other information about the layout. This stays
with your file no matter where it is stored and uploads with
your file to the gallery. It's great because you can go back
to the layout in the future and read about everything you have
done and the supplies used.
Answer 2: It's the same
in Photoshop Elements!
Response: Thanks, ladies!
I'll be sure to do it that way. Sounds like a great idea to keep
track of supplies used; then I only have to document it once! |

Question: How do you make
the letters go closer together in PSE 5? I can't remember the
term for it, so I can't look it up in the PSE Help (usually doesn't
help anyway!) or search on the message boards. I'm thinking that
changing the spacing between lines of text is leading? What I'd
like to do is change the spacing between the letters of the text.
Answer 1: I don't think
you can do kerning in PSE. At least I've never found a way
to do it.
Answer
2: I can't find this option in PSE 5. You can do this
text effect in a Word document (Format> Font> Character
Spacing). Character spacing is Normal, Expanded or Condensed.
If this is what you want to do, I'd do your journaling in
Word and then paste into your layout.
Response: Kerning
- that is the word that I was trying to remember. You've saved
me some sleep, because it would have driven me nuts until I
remembered that word! I looked at that thread, but I don't
have "show Asian text options" under
Preferences> General. Thanks for finding that though!
Response
Answer 1: Sure, you can do it. Type your text in CS3,
change the kerning and copy and paste it into PSE. Sorry,
bad joke.
You can cheat a little bit between words. Highlight
the space between words and change it to a smaller font size.
Not much of a help, but sometimes it makes things fit a bit
better.
Response
Answer 2: In PSE 6, the 'show Asian text options'
is under Edit> Preferences> Type. I don't have 5, but
maybe it is under that. Thanks for bringing this up. I wanted
to do this the other day and I knew that I had seen it somewhere,
but couldn't remember what it was and was too lazy to look.
Response 2: That's just
where it was in PSE 5 and it actually worked! Thanks everyone
for the advice. Probably no one else would notice the difference,
but I like the letters closer together and that's what matters!
Now, I need to actually finish the layout. |

Question: This is probably
covered somewhere and, if it is, I apologize for the question
yet again. Are the tutorials that appear in the newsletter stored
anywhere else on site? For example, do they automatically appear
in the Scrap Girls University section after a short period? I
ask because I've seen great tutorials that I'd like to keep for
future reference, but organized in such a way that I can find
the tutorial topic easily. Thanks in advance for your help!
Answer: I highlight the
tutorial in the newsletter and Copy> Paste it into my Word
program and then I save them in a special Scrap Girls TUT's
folder that I created. I also sometimes just save the whole
newsletter and rename it so that I remember what tutorial is
in it.
Response: That's a great
suggestion - wish I had posted this earlier.
Response Question: Oh!
This IS a great suggestion. I think I will be doing this today.
I have all of my newsletters in a folder, but it is not easily
searchable. Also, are newsletters archived at all? Is there
a way to look through older newsletters for more tutorials?
Response
Answer 1: Heidi (she puts the newsletter together) is
adding all of the tutorials to the University. So, keep checking
back because she's always adding new stuff.
Response Answer 2: I do
the cut and paste thing, too. On my Mac, in Pages, I can even
create a table of contents page and tell the program to automatically
use the headers (or titles of the tutorials) in the table of
contents. As I add to it, Pages automatically creates a new
table of contents entry for me. I would guess you can set this
up in Word as well. |

April Board Game: Who Am I?
In honor of the month that starts the silliest
way possible... it's time to get our silliness on! This month
we'll be getting to know some silly and little known facts about
our Scrap Girls Team Members as we play a rousing game of "Who
Am I?" Every day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will
post a fact about one of the ScrapGirls Team Members and ask, "Who
Am I?" A new fact will be added daily until someone correctly
guesses which team member is being described. Once a team member
is correctly guessed, a new team member will be featured starting
the following day.
Team Members include anyone featured on the "About
Us" page of the ScrapGirls website including Product
Design Team, Layout Artist Team, Welcoming Committee, etc.
Answers to the “Who Am I?” puzzles can be found
anywhere on the ScrapGirls site... including Gallery Layouts,
team member bios, Boutique Layouts, etc.
If you are the first to guess one of the team
members correctly you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap
Girls Boutique! Remember you may only win ONCE during the monthly
message board game. We want as many people to win prizes as possible!

It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital
scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting
in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing
pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make
things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools that
you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That
is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you
do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers.
It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder
why you haven't been using it all along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite
to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents
on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date
at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing
important business and financial files, because the backup happens
without Ro having to do a single thing.
