Business Corner by Ro: Choose What You Want to Be
Note: Prior editions of this series (which is currently focusing on business plans) can be found on my blog.

(The rumor is that this is the Scrap Girls home office. What do you think really goes on in there?)

Market Focus
Today’s topic is going to be short and sweet. However, answering the associated questions will take you some time, so don’t let the brevity of this section mislead you. And, don’t let it deceive you into thinking that it isn’t important. Completing this task is perhaps the most important thing you will do as you complete your business plan. If you currently own a business and you can’t answer these questions, you had better get crackin’ because you are operating in a confused state!
Have you ever heard the word demographics? The word “demographics” sounds like some sort of a crazy map to the uninitiated. Well, it is a map, but instead of being a map of a country, your company’s demographics are a type of map of who your customers are. Do you know?
Here are the main questions you need to answer about your customers to determine your demographics:
It is imperative to know these things generally (although, there will certainly be many exceptions to the overall findings) because a company is like a person: it has a personality of its own and one of the methods of succeeding is to then attempt to locate the consumers that would be interested in it. The whole process is somewhat like finding a spouse when you want to get married. If you don’t know what you are looking for when you are dating, you won’t locate a good match.
I think I had better tell you right now that a common business mistake is to assume that you can be all and do all for everyone. This is impossible and if you try, you will end up confusing the very individuals that would have liked your company if you would have decided who you are. Despite what you think, your business will not be attractive to the entire world. You cannot solve the planet’s problems or make everyone fall in love with you.
A general rule of thumb for a successful business is this: if you have a product or service that you believe will appeal to everyone in the world, you have a certain failure on your hands.
Why?
Because it isn’t possible to market to the world about a product or service that will appeal to absolutely everyone on the planet. (Besides, there isn’t such a thing.) No one searches for “products that appeal to everyone.” But, if you have a product or service that will appeal to snowboarders ages 16-30, living in the United States, who consider themselves to be trendsetters, then you have something to work with, because there are methods of getting to this type of individual.
So, figure out who your customers are and then you will better understand how to approach them. You will probably learn more about yourself in the process and discover more about what type of company you would like to run.
By the way, if you are passionate about what you are doing, you are likely to discover that your customers are very much like you!

Way Cool Stuff Product
Review: Layer Your Own Brushes
Layer Your Own Brushes have always been some of my favorite
scrapping tools and a staple in my scrapping supplies folder. I go
back to them again and again. What I love about them is how versatile
they are and how brilliantly simple they are to use. The fact
that they come with both ABR files and PNG files of each brush means
that virtually anyone can use them, regardless of software. Even
working in Photoshop, I sometimes find myself dragging PNGs onto my
layouts rather than loading the brushes. It just depends on what
I’m
doing and how many brushes I intend to use.
I decided to create a recipe
card using Amanda Sok’s Layer Your Own File Card as
the recipe background. I loaded the brush set, stamped the card
shape onto a blank layer and placed a paper over it using a clipping
mask. Then
I used the Distressed Layer Brush from the set and stamped that over
the card in a pale beige. I merged the layers together, applied
one of Syndee’s Sanded Edge Styles and had a perfectly
customized file card that took only minutes to create!
To create the
scalloped border, I used Erica’s Layer Your Own Scalloped
Borders. For
this, I dragged the PNG files onto my layout. I clipped paper
to the scallops and then changed the color of the trim and added my
own style to it. It was so easy, but the results are great.
Layer Your
Own Brushes are fast, easy, and most importantly fun! Once you
try them, they’ll be something you find yourself returning to
again and again.

Joanne Yarin, or Jo to those who know her, is a teacher
and mommy to a bright four-year-old little boy. When she's not working,
scrapping or chasing her son around, she can be found curled up on the
sofa reading a good suspense novel, spending time with her family, or
fighting the never-ending housework battle. A true lover of warmth and
sunshine, she plans on relocating to sunny Florida this summer and leaving
the cold and snow behind forever. She is looking forward to scrapping
with lots of bright, tropical colors!

January
Events
January Board Game: Progressive
Word Scramble
Here's how it works. The object of the game
is to correctly guess a boutique item by solving clues and
unscrambling letters we give you. Each day you are given a
letter or several letters of the name of a boutique item as
well as a clue. You won't know how many letters are in the
boutique item name until it is complete. We will keep giving
clues until a correct guess is made.
The designer's name is not included as part
of the puzzle, and the word "collection" is not included
as part of the puzzle either. Letters from any other words
in product names (such as "biggie", "brush", or "transparency")
may be given as part of the puzzle.
Here is an example:
Day 1 Letters: i
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so pretty
Day 2 Letters: t n
Day 2 Hint: I know you'll love my soft reds, and blues, and
greens
Day 3 Letters: u o i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give me some flowers
Answer: Angie Briggs' Intuition Collection
Be the first to answer it correctly and
win a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only
allowed ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed
ONE win per month. When you make your guess, you MUST link
it to the boutique item you are referencing. We will play the
game daily during the entire month of January. When a correct
answer is given, the new puzzle will start the following day.

January Layout Contests:
Layout
Contest: You could win a $10 Gift Certificate
to the Boutique! With New Year’s Day here, we tend
to think in terms of our resolutions for the year ahead.
How about taking some time to reflect on the year that
has just passed? You could look at the resolutions you
made last year at this time and scrap about how you did
at keeping them. Or on a less serious note, you could do
a retrospective of your year with a few (or several) photos
that highlight your year. Maybe there is one event in your
year that was extra special, like a wedding, a birth, or
a death in the family. So let’s see your layouts
highlighting the year just past.
Mid-January
Layout Contest: The new year can be a time for new
beginnings and fresh starts. Maybe you've recently reorganized
a room, put an addition on or remodeled your home. Or, maybe
you are working on turning over a new leaf in your life.
We want to see your layouts about something that's giving
you a fresh start (past or present). Post your layouts in
the correct gallery, and if your layout is chosen, you'll
win a $10 GC to the Boutique! All layouts are due by February
14, 2008 at Midnight, ET!

It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there
waiting in your software for you to use such as paths,
masks, the drawing pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you
can make things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools
that you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear...
That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets
frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this
trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all
along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used
Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself
in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of
the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook

Ten Beginner Tips on Type |
|
|

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
