Life Muses by Ro: Any Small Thing is Great
It’s the first of the year and for some reason, most of us are
driven to set goals for ourselves. We want to improve. We know in our
hearts that we should improve. We have just eaten too much Christmas
candy and the yucky aftertaste makes us long to improve. Unfortunately,
we often set goals so lofty that we doom ourselves to failure before
we begin.
This year I am going to list a few things that I would like
to work towards during 2008. I don’t intend to begin doing them
instantly because I know that I won’t. But, I will tuck the list
in my journal, place it on my office wall, and occasionally remind
myself that I have specific things I am working towards. And, I am
going to refuse to think that I am a failure if I am not able to change
every negative thing about myself in one week or solve world peace.
During
2008, I would like to...
- Not take myself so seriously
- Find some time each day to laugh
- Plan time to learn new things
- Journal more often about the blessings I have received
- Look at myself in the mirror everyday and say, “You’re
okay”
- Tell more people more often that I appreciate what they do for
me
- Clean my office once a week
- Go outside every day
- Take a couple of vacations
- Grow my hair out
- Go to the beautician more often
- Give myself manicures
- Buy new socks
- Clean my top drawer
- Throw or give away things I haven’t used in the past year
- Exercise more regularly (I’m refusing to beat myself up with
a specific goal because I already know my mind rebels against such
things. I tried that several times last year and failed. So, this
year, I am simply telling myself that I want to develop some sort
of undiscovered routine. Maybe I will dance in the living room. Maybe
I’ll return to yoga class. Maybe I’ll let Julianne boss
me around in the gym. I don’t know yet.)
- Insert more vegetables and fruits into my day because experience
has taught me that this one thing leads me to weight stabilization
(I refuse to go on a diet because my mind rebels against diets.)
- Repaint the upstairs trim
- Plant some flowers in my backyard
- Pay one of my kids to clean out my files
- Enjoy my life. My life is not perfect by any means, but it’s
pretty good and I think I am going to try to remember that more often.
My challenge for you today is this: Make a list of things that you
want to think about doing more or less of during 2008. And, repeat
this sentence out loud five times: Any small thing I do that makes
me feel better about myself is great!
Have a super day – and year!

Tutorial: Customizing Pre-Made
Papers with ScrapSimple Paper Templates
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop
CS3 on a Mac.
There are many times when you have a beautiful paper picked for a
layout, but you want to add a little something extra to customize it
to the subject of your digital scrapbooking layout. In this tutorial,
I am adding two templates to a paper from the ScrapSimple Paper
Template: Flake Flurry to give it a winter feel.

First, create a
new document at 300 ppi. I chose to make a 12x12 inch canvas for this
layout. Open the paper of your choice and while holding down the Shift key,
drag it onto your newly created document. Next, open “TYO_SS_Paper_FlakeFlurry_LTflake.png” and,
while holding down the Shift key, drag it onto your document.

I want this
layer to add just a little flake texture to the paper, so I set the
Blend Mode of this layer to "Screen" at 75% Opacity.

Now, I am going
to open another paper and, while holding down the Shift key,
drag it onto my document. I chose a cream colored paper to add a little
lightness. Open “TYO_SS_Paper_FlakeFlurry_SnowFall.png” and,
while holding down the Shift key, drag it onto the document.
Now you should have four layers in your document, two papers and two
templates.

Next,
I am going to select the layer “TYO_SS_Paper_FlakeFlurry_SnowFall.png” by
going to Select> Load Selection.

Check to be sure that you
are selecting the correct layer, listed in the Channel drop-down, and
then click "OK."

On the cream colored paper layer, with the snowflake
pattern selected, go to Edit> Copy and then Edit> Paste.
Now, you should have a cream snowflake cutout layer. You can delete
the “TYO_SS_Paper_FlakeFlurry_SnowFall.png” and
cream paper layer, if you would like. This helps to keep your file
clean and small.

I want the cream flake texture layer to fade in and
out of my background a little, so I am going to apply a layer mask
to this layer by clicking the icon that is circled in the screenshot
above.

Make
sure that your mask is on the layer that you are working on. I am going
to use the Gradient Tool to fade my snowflake layer. Select the Gradient
Tool on the Tools palette and, by clicking on the icon circled in
the screen shot above, the Gradient Editor Palette will open.

I want
the gradient to be black to transparent, as shown.

Then, on my mask
connected to my cream flake texture layer, I am going to use the Gradient
Tool to fade out small areas of the snowflake pattern. Click and drag
the gradient in any direction that you want until you get the effect
you desire.
Now, my background is ready for all of my other goodies.
And, there you have it... a unique paper to use for a perfect
winter layout!

Events
January Board Game:
Progressive Word Scramble
Here's how it works. The object of the
game is to correctly guess a boutique item by solving clues
and unscrambling letters we give you. Each day you are given
a letter or several letters of the name of a boutique item
as well as a clue. You won't know how many letters are in
the boutique item name until it is complete. We will keep
giving clues until a correct guess is made.
The designer's
name is not included as part of the puzzle, and the word "collection" is
not included as part of the puzzle either. Letters from any
other words in product names (such as "biggie", "brush",
or "transparency") may be given as part of the puzzle.
Here
is an example:
Day 1 Letters: i
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so
pretty
Day 2 Letters: t n
Day 2 Hint: I know
you'll love my soft reds, and blues, and greens
Day 3 Letters:
u o i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give me some
flowers
Answer: Angie Briggs' Intuition Collection
Be
the first to answer it correctly and win a $5.00 Gift Certificate
to the Boutique! You are only allowed ONE guess per daily
clue, and you are only allowed ONE win per month. When you
make your guess, you MUST link it to the boutique item you
are referencing. We will play the game daily during the entire
month of January. When a correct answer is given, the new
puzzle will start the following day.

January Layout Contests:
Layout
Contest: You could win a $10 Gift Certificate
to the Boutique! With New Year’s Day here, we tend
to think in terms of our resolutions for the year ahead.
How about taking some time to reflect on the year that
has just passed? You could look at the resolutions you
made last year at this time and scrap about how you did
at keeping them. Or on a less serious note, you could do
a retrospective of your year with a few (or several) photos
that highlight your year. Maybe there is one event in your
year that was extra special, like a wedding, a birth, or
a death in the family. So let’s see your layouts
highlighting the year just past.
Mid-December
Layout Contest: The end of
2007 is upon us. 2008 will be starting soon! Do you have any
New Year’s
Resolutions? We want you to scrap them! Show us your layouts
featuring your New Year Resolutions and you could win a $10
Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Post your layouts
to the Monthly Contest Gallery between December 15th and January
14th to be eligible. Good Luck!

It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there
waiting in your software for you to use such as paths,
masks, the drawing pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you
can make things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools
that you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear...
That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets
frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this
trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all
along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used
Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself
in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of
the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
