I am simply getting desperate for a vacation. It is cold,
snowy, and I've got the mid-winter blues. I have last summer's
vacation shots as my screen saver and I have started wandering away
from my computer so I can come back and watch it go around. But I have
found that scrapbooking those vacation pictures of mine is helping me
chase the blues away, and so I periodically stop and scrap a layout
as I work.
If you need a break too, here's a sale that will
let you pick up some of the great Scrap Girls goodies you've been
longing for so you can take a scrapbooking vacation of your own. 16.9%
off almost everything in the Scrap Girls Boutique. But you know
the drill... If you don't get shopping, you will miss this winter
vacation because it will end promptly at midnight, January 31st!

The theme/challenge:
In the spirit of Valentine's Day, complete a "numbered list"
type layout about some of the things you love! It can be a Top 5,
Top 10, Top 20, or even a Top 100! Whatever works for you. Your list
can be a broad variety (where you list can include everything from
your favorite color to your favorite person), or more specific, such
as your top 10 favorites foods, or top 20 movies of all time (for
example). The only rules are that is must be about YOU, it must be
a numbered list, and it must include things YOU love (or at least
really, really like... lol).
How to participate:
Start thinking about this challenge. You can complete your layout
at anytime (now, during the crop, or even up to a week after), however,
please wait to post it in the gallery until February 8. On the day
of the crop (or anytime thereafter), feel free to post your All About
Me LO in the gallery in the crop section. Come to the crop, at 9pm
EST, and chat with everyone about the theme!
January Contests
Message Board Game: Progressive
Word Scramble
Join hosts Marnie (sprinklz) and Elizabeth
(moviestar) for this new board game. Here's
how it works. Each day you are given a few
letters of the phrase or word in a boutique
item and a hint. You won't know how many
letters are in the word until it is complete.
We will keep giving clues until a correct
guess is made. Here is an example:
Day 1 Letters: i o u
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so pretty
Day 2 Letters: t n n
Day 2 Hint: I know you'll love my soft reds,
and blues, and greens
Day 3 Letters: t i i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give
me some flowers
Answer: Angie Briggs Intuition
Be the first to answer it correctly and
win a $5.00 to the boutique! You are only
allowed ONE guess per clue, and you are
only allowed ONE win per month. When you
make your guess, you MUST link it to the
boutique item you are referencing.
See
the message boards for further details!
Layout Contest: Tell us
about your favorite gift or most favorite
part of the Christmas holiday that just
passed. Maybe it was the camera you received,
or maybe it was just the opportunity to
spend it with family and friends. Whatever
it was you liked best, showcase it in a
layout and be eligible to win a $10 gift
certificate to the boutique!
Be sure to post
your layout in the proper gallery to
be eligible!
And don't forget, ScrapGirls has weekly challenges as well. These
are all found on our message
board. There is plenty of inspiration here, so now there is
no excuse to NOT to scrap!

ScrapSimple Layer Your Own: Recipe Card 1 Brush

Directions for making layout:
I got the idea a week before Christmas to make a
recipe book as gifts for my family members. It would contain recipes
from my grandmother that we had all come to love over the years.
Now with her gone, these recipes have become even more cherished.
The first thing I did was gather the recipes and
type them all up in a Word document so that they would be easy
to copy and paste into Photoshop later. Then, with little time
on my hands, I knew that I wanted to stick with only a few products.
I chose the Spice of Life Collection because
I fell in love with the collection the first time I saw it, and
it was perfect for this project. By using one main kit, all of
the recipe cards would have a similar look to them.
I began by creating a blank image in Photoshop that
was 5 inches wide by 4 inches high. I used this size because it
would allow me to print out four cards at a time on a standard
paper size. Once I had my blank document, I chose a background
paper. I resized the paper down to 5x5 inches and dragged it onto
my first layer. Then I chose various elements and brushes and
added those to the page, leaving space for the recipe. Once I
had my embellishments in place, I added the recipe by copying
and pasting from my Word document. I used the same font throughout
to (again!) add to the cohesiveness of the project. For my project
I created 14 recipe cards and a cover. So I created 7 unique-looking
recipe cards and just duplicated them twice with different recipes.
I used various filters and brushes throughout and added little
notes that my Grandma had added on her original cards.
Once my cards were designed the way I wanted them,
I created a new document and added four cards to a page. I then
printed these out on high quality photo paper. (Note: I am sure
you can use cardstock as well, but when I did this my colors were
off. This may be due to my printer, so make sure and test before
you print large quantities.) Once they were printed, I cut them
out with my paper trimmer and punched holes in the corners with
a circle hole punch. Then I took a loose-leaf binder circle clip
and attached to the cards, making sure I had the cards in the
order I wanted with the cover on top. I was able to create 8 copies
of these and give them as gifts for Christmas. It was a hit, everyone
loved them!
Note: Had I had more time, I would have laminated
each individual card, perfect for messy kitchens!

Directions for making layout:
First I placed the background paper down from the
Fireside Collection, then created the brown paper
strip using the Paper Styles Tool and added a
small drop shadow to it. Rotated and resized my photo into place
adding a small stroke/outline to it and drop shadow. I created
a new layer above the background paper and added some paint using
the Paint Stroke Brush Set and moved them into
place. Then I placed the stitching onto the photo, rotated and
erased the areas I didn't need, also added a small drop
shadow to them. I chose a brown ribbon from the Florida
Embellishment Set, placed over the photo and added a
small drop shadow. I chose a heart from the Art Journal
Embellishment Biggie and brown bow from the Lovin'
Letters Embellishments Mini and attached with a pin from
the Charming Embellishment Biggie, adding drop
shadows to them all. Selected suitable word art from the Fireside
Collection, laid it into place with a small, soft emboss
effect. Finished off the layout by placing the Sage Border
on the top and adding a small drop shadow.

Journaling Paper Biggie
Directions for making layout:
First I brushed my background paper with a Paint
Stroke so it would look less plain and not too grungy.
Then I put the photo frame and two pictures above it, and I deleted
a bit of the photo so it looked like the photo was under the ribbon.
Then I chose another background paper and cut it with the rectangle
tool and pasted it under the frame. After that I added some flowers...
my favorites! After flowers, I put some ribbons with stitches
and hooked it to the paper. Some stitches again above and on the
right side of the page. And then I chose a light colour paper
for my journaling and cut it using the Journal Strips
Template. I added the torn note paper and then an eyelet
and put pink ribbon on top. I chose a nice, plain heart and put
it above the picture and a love bottle cap on the frame. I also
added drop shadows on my page to give it a more "realistic
look."

Name of designer: Kellie Puddy
Name of layout: Love Wall Hanging
Type of layout: Digital and Paper
Scrap Girls Ingredients:
Directions for making layout:
I chose the papers and elements I wanted to use
to complete this project and printed them out onto the cardstock.

Then off to the hardware store to purchase some
chipboard letters and baseboard shape.

I decided to paint the edges so
when the project was completed and hanging, you wouldn't
see any bare chipboard.

Next, I traced the letters and cut them to shape,
being sure that I cut on the inside line so there wouldn't
be any overhanging bits of paper on the chipboard letters.

I then stuck the paper down with some craft glue
and even painted the glue over the paper to protect it and give
it a shine.

I tied some ribbons onto the letters and attached
them all to the oval shape with some wood glue (some may call
this liquid nails). I cut some extra elements from my print outs
of the Beloved Collection, and used the craft
glue to attach them. Using a drill with a thin attachment, I screwed
2 small holes at the top, and threaded some ribbon through, tying
knots in the back to make a hanger.

How Cool is THAT? |
 |
A Designer's Life: Ann Hetzel Gunkel
aka design butcher
Why design butcher?
I'm an unrepentant carnivore from Chicago (hog butcher to
the world, home of the stockyards that fed America at the turn of the
century), and I'm perfectly happy to use digital tools to butcher graphic
design.
Fast Facts about the butcher of design:
40-something Professor of Cultural Studies & Humanities,
native Chicagoan, Polish-American mom, graphic designer, bungalow-loving,
city dweller who is glad to be a Scrap Girl. Also plays accordion, piano
and guitar. Likes to bake. Wishes Stephen Colbert were president. Adores
her shimmering son Stas' and DH David who serves as personal chef. Firmly
believes that pierogi and pastry have transformative powers.
Favorite reasons to digi scrap:
No mess... And everything is reusable to infinity and beyond! And, it
makes me happy.
Favorite scrapping-related project besides scrapping:
Making cool books for my relatives as gifts. Coffee table
books are way easier than they seem if you're a digi-scrapper. Upload
a few layouts, arrange 'em and order a hardbound masterwork. And they
look so impressive to the non digital crowd (wink).
Favorite movie seen dozens of times but still
so cool:
This changes from day to day. But today it's the film
noir classic The Third Man by Director Carol Reed, written
by Graham Greene and starring a brilliant Orson Welles. Put this in
your Netflix queue if only for the amazing cuckoo clock speech by Orson
and the ultimate noir sewer sequence. Ah-mazing!
Favorite question without suitable answer:
Why is our dog the most photogenic member of our family?
Favorite recipe of the minute (yeah, they change
that fast!):
Fennel, Beet and Walnut Salad. Why is the lowly and lovely
beet so maligned? Gosh, I love beets. I adore beets. I can eat beets
every day of the week. And I often do!
Favorite images:
I am mesmerized by icons, saints on holy cards, and all matter
of baroque visual excess. Add to that fifties kitsch and German expressionism
and you get Type-A (Ann) visuals.
Favorite astronomer:
Copernicus. No contest. (Yes, I am a geek.)
Favorite film that no one else (besides DH) likes:
Dead Man by Jim Jarmusch. Utterly brilliant. Utterly merciless.
Favorite challenge of the past year:
Training for the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot in my Chicago
neighborhood of Edison Park. Running for charity with 3500 other maniacs,
we raised over 80K for a center for the developmentally disabled. And
my race time improved 15 % since last year. Yippee! Two years ago, I
was an I-hate-to-run-and-this-is-going-to-kill-me athlete barely managing
a mile three days a week. Now, I run a 4K five days a week and feel
awesome. The motto: don't give up on your New Year's resolutions just
yet. They can really work out.
Favorite incongruous musical loves:
Polka and opera. Oh, and avant garde accordion music. And
minimalist symphonies. And Sinatra. And Gorale (Polish highlanders'
very dissonant indigenous music). And Django. And everything Louis Armstrong
ever touched. And tango. And punk. (I was in a punk band 25 years ago.
So was dear husband.)
Favorite material goods I couldn't live without:
Nikon D70, Photoshop, chocolate and coffee.
Favorite TV show I can't believe I love:
Battlestar Galactica is the darkest, most well-written, gripping
saga on the tube. I love its grim vision and relentless pushing of the
happy-ending boundaries of shiny Star Trek humanism.
Favorite places to be:
Chicago, of course. Krakow, Poland. Berlin. Florence. New
York City. I have no interest in any place tropical, beach-related or
sun-worshipping!
Favorite utterly useless topic of expertise:
I actually wrote a doctoral dissertation in Philosophy called
Engendering Space: Poetics, Technology, Philosophy. And I had to read
French, German and Ancient Greek to do it. Ugh! I know, I must have
had WAY too much time on my hands, right? Chalk it up to the power of
coffee.
Favorite elixir of gustatory joy:
I love dark chocolate in all its permutations. The very faves
for me now are dark chocolate covered orange peels from Chicago legend
Fannie May. In close second place are the Weinbrandbohnen (brandy filled
dark choc beans) from Trader Joe's. Ah... what velvety bliss life sometimes
offers.
Favorite opera staging, ever, of all times, furreal!:
The San Francisco Opera/Lyric Opera of Chicago production
of Puccini's Turandot staged by artist David Hockney. So cool
and so vivid an experience one critic "emerged humming the scenery."
The perfect marriage of graphic design and music. (You can get this
on DVD by the way. And it is awesome, beautiful, and brilliant.) This
spring will be my third time seeing this to-die-for (in a suitably tragic
aria, of course) production.
Favorite cause celebre of the moment:
We need to get soda pop out of our schools, dining rooms,
kitchens and kids. This would cut down on childhood obesity in a big
way. One of every two children born today will develop diabetes in their
lifetime. This is an outrageous public health crisis. Really cool book
on this topic: Marion Nestle's What to Eat. Really cool related
book on the evil empire - no, really! - of fast food is Eric Schlosser's
Fast Food Nation. My five year old has never been to McD's.
I'm not kidding. And that's not gonna change (she says self-righteously!).
Favorite scientific theoretical debate:
The legitimacy of Einstein's quest for the "theory of
everything" (Unified Field Theory) and the philosophical implications
of string theory. Love it!
Favorite simple concept:
Joy is an undervalued category of radical potential.
Favorite product I've designed:
City Camo Collection Biggie

I like its slightly distressed feeling and I love
anything that is text-laden and collage-y (is that a word?).

"The Beet Queen" Layout by Ann Hetzel
Gunkel
Depicts the aforementioned Fennel, Beet & Walnut
Salad and my new favorite party skirt!
Ingredients:
This is me as a Top Gun in a place I had no interest in visiting. The
EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Museum. Its amazing what moms
will do, isn't it?

- Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to sneak a peek inside of Ro's layers.
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that)
- "Get in" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: This is NOT a beginning tutorial. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop Elements before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

MSN customers: If you are reading this newsletter
via email, please do not use the MSN Blue Butterfly browser as it breaks
the underlying HTML code by inserting a lot of junk characters and adding
additional HTML code. This is why the links won't open correctly for
you. The solution is to view the newsletters via a different browser,
such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. To do this:
-
Sign onto the Internet via the Butterfly browser, as usual.
-
Minimize this browser and then go on to the Internet using another
browser.
-
If you are using Internet Explorer, this is the small blue "e"
icon on your desktop or startup bar.
-
When you get on the Internet, browse to http://hotmail.com
and log into your email account as usual using your email address
and password.
-
You will then see all of your email and will find that the links
work correctly for you.
Hotmail readers: There are many things that could
cause your newsletter links to not open correctly. The newsletter is
coded so all you have to do is click on one of the product graphics
(including those of the freebies), and you will be taken directly to
the correct page in the Boutique. If this doesn't occur, then something
is wrong on your end. The newsletters are always tested in Hotmail before
sending them out so we are sure they do work for Hotmail users generally.
Here are some potential solutions for you:
-
If you are also an MSN Internet Service Provider customer, please
do not use the Blue Butterfly browser as it breaks the underlying
HTML code by inserting a lot of junk characters.
-
Make sure you have updated your email client to the current version
and are no longer using the Beta version, as it breaks the links
and inserts a lot of underlying junk characters which won't allow
the links to work properly.
-
Add newsletters@scrapgirls.com to your safe list.
-
Change your Mail Display Settings to the following (available
through the Options link):
-
Make sure you don't have a popup blocker that is stopping the
link from opening up. If you do, it should help to put newsletters@scrapgirls.com
or http://www.scrapgirls.com
in your safe list. You may have to turn off the popup blocker, or
hit the Ctrl key while clicking on the link to
get it to open correctly.
-
Adjust your Internet security settings in your Internet Explorer
browser:
-
On the Tools menu, click Internet
Options.
-
On the Security Tab, click Trusted
Sites.
-
Click Sites, and then clear Require
server verification (https:) for all sites in this
zone.
-
In the Add this Web Site to the zone box,
type .scrapgirls.com and click Add.
-
On the Security Tab, click Default
Level.
-
Repeat these steps for the Internet zone and
the Restricted sites zone.
-
Adjust your Internet privacy settings:
-
On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click
Internet Options.
-
On the Privacy tab, click Sites.
-
In the Address of Web site box, type hotmail.com,
and then click Allow.
-
Do the same for passport.com and msn.com,
and then click OK.
-
On the Privacy tab, click Default.
-
You may also need to adjust your anti-virus software settings or
privacy software or install the latest version of Java.
